Outline of Course Outcomes
Supporting people affected by domestic violence – 2 day course
On completion of this course participants will be able to demonstrate the following:
- understanding of the impact, nature and patterns of domestic violence, together with the range and depth of ways in which people may experience
abuse
- understanding of the complexity of the helping relationship, and how to most effectively empower the person to seek the most appropriate help for themselves
- an awareness of the impact that domestic violence may have on children and how their needs can be met
- knowledge of the legal remedies (e.g. injunctions) and how a victim might obtain them
- the skills and abilities to support a victim of domestic violence empathically, whilst at the same time keeping an awareness of own needs and
how to appropriately meet them
- understand the range and role of other helping agencies, including Victim Support
- an awareness of the impact of domestic violence on all people in society regardless of sexuality or gender
Supporting people affected by homophobia – 1 day course
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- outline society’s attitudes and influences around sexuality, and the impact these have on lesbian, gay and bisexual people
- define a homophobic incident
- identify the impact of homophobic crimes and repeat victimisation on LGB people
- discuss the possible concerns and support needs of LGB people
- communicate with LGB victims of homophobia in a manner which acknowledges their experiences and assists them to identify the help which Victim Support or other agencies might be able to provide
Racism Awareness – 1 day course
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- identify stereotypes and describe how they are perpetuated, and identify the key ways in which racism manifests itself in British society today
- identify ways in which racism can impact on people, and how on-going victimisation may affect them
- identify some of the support needs of victims of racism and explain the roles of Victim Support and other relevant agencies.
Supporting people affected by sexual violence – 1 day course
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- define ‘sexual violence’
- outline the effects which being a victim of sexual violence may have on men and women, and how to support them
- describe commonly-held attitudes towards rape victims expressed by some members of society
- explain the barriers that may particularly exist for male victims in relation to expressing their feelings and needs
- assess and challenge their own attitudes to sexual violence
- provide information about the services available from other related agencies
‘Training to be a trainer’ - 3 day course
On completion of this course participants will:
- be able to identify how trainers can create a learning environment that is supportive and challenging, and encourages participation
- have acquired knowledge of, and practised, using a range of participative learning methods including skills practice, and whole and small group discussions, joint learning activities and trainer input
- know a variety of ways in which adults learn, including ‘multiple intelligences’ and accelerated learning
- have learned and practised effective feedback skills
- have learned how to plan and deliver effective training
- be able to integrate equality and diversity issues into their training practice
Assertiveness Training - 1 day course
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- identify the elements of assertive behaviour
- describe the differences between passive, aggressive and assertive behaviours
- act in an assertive manner
Time Management - 1 day course
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- identify their own personal relationship to time and improvements that they could make to their time management
- describe two time management strategies
Stress Management - 1 day course
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- identify their own personal reactions to stress
- define what ’stress’ is
- describe two or more effective stress management strategies
Understanding trauma – 1 day course
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- define psychological trauma
- understand what causes it
- tell the difference between stress and psychological trauma
- explain the symptoms of emotional trauma
- define post-traumatic stress disorder
- describe strategies of coping
- identify agencies that can help and how to refer people
Effective Listening Skills – 1 day course
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- explain the importance of effective listening
- recognise the barriers to effective listening
- understand the importance of body language
- learn how to listen for feelings
- develop empathy – demonstrating appreciation for the other person’s point of view
- define ‘active listening’
- be confident in using active listening techniques, including paraphrasing, summarising and reflecting skills
